Peer Assessment

Peer assessment is having classmates review, critique, and offer ways to improve

something that has been written by a student. In the peer-review process, the classmate may not

find any mistakes or be able to offer any areas of improvement. Instead, they may reflect upon a

life experience, view, or belief that ties into what they are assessing. Peer assessments are a

wonderful way to grow and understand what other classmates may think about certain topics.

There are many benefits of peer assessment. One of those benefits is expanding

our minds and thought process. As students are peer reviewing, there likely will be different

views and opinions. In the peer assessment process, the student that is having their work assessed

may find comfort in knowing that someone other than the instructor is reviewing and assessing

the work.

There will be challenges in giving peer feedback during peer assessments. Some of the

benefits I mentioned about peer assessment can also have the opposite effect. Just like having to

realize students may have different views and opinions can open the peer assessor’s mind, it can

also cause conflict. The difference in opinions, ideas, thoughts, and life experiences on sensitive

topics can be overwhelming. Subjects such as religion, war, abortion, death penalty, and politics

are some of these areas. In those situations, it might be difficult for the assessor to give an

unbiased review of what they are assessing.

In this case, they might be okay with the instructor critiquing and correcting their work, but not

their peers. Criticism is difficult for many, and this can be especially true with something as
