To calculate the population density of a given area, it is needed to divide the number of total population by the size of the area.

Population density = Number of people / size of the land area.

Here the the unit of the land area should be in square miles or in square kilometers. If the measured size of the given area is very small, then it can be used feet or meters. For more professional or demographic purposes it is needed to use the standard square mile or kilometers.

The unit of the population density is people per unit of size of the area.

Example : 2500 people / square kilometer
