When the valve is in the load position,
the fixed volume sample loop is washed and loaded with fresh sample from
a syringe. Excess from the washings is sent to the waste. To inject the
contents of the sample loop, the valve is rotated 60° counterclockwise.
In the inject position, solvent under high pressure, flowing from the
pump to the column, pushes the contents of the sample loop towards the
column. The reproducibility of injections made using the injection valve
and fixed volume loop is very good.
Shown below is an injection valve used in high-performance liquid chromatography. Correctly label the valve that...
Electrospray time‑of‑flight (TOF) mass spectrometry was used to analyze the eluate from a high‑performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separation. The mass spectrum of one chromatographic peak, containing a protein of unknown molecular mass, displays MHnn+ peaks at m/z= 6636.908, 6194.524, 5807.480, 5465.932, 5162.360, and 4890.726. Find the average molecular mass (M) of the neutral protein and its standard deviation.

A vapor-compression refrigeration system which operates on the cascade cycle arrangement shown below is used to obtain refrigeration at a low temperature. Refrigerant-12 is the working fluid in the high-temperature cycle and Refrigerant-13 is used in the low-temperature cycle. For the Refrigerant 13 cycle, the working fluid enters the compressor as saturated vapor at -30°F and is compressed isentropically to 250 lbf/in2. Saturated liquid leaves the intermediate heat exchanger at 250 lbf/in2 and enters the expansion valve. For the Refrigerant...
2. If two different compounds have the same Rr value, how might they be identified using paper chromatography? 3. Why is it important to keep the spots on the paper as small as possible? 4. If the solvent pool at the bottom of the beaker touched the spots on the 1.5cm line, what would happen to the spots? How would you address this error? 5. If you were teaching a student how to do paper chromatography, what three pieces of...

A battery of cylindrical membranes shown below is used for an extractive bioconversion. Extractive bloconversion means that fermentation and extraction of product occur at the same time. inner tube product) annular space A 10% glucose in water solution is passed through the annular space at a rate of 70 kg/h. An organic solvent enters the inner tube at a rate of 50 kg/h which cannot penetrate the membrane. On the other hand, glucose and water do not enter the inner...
(100 points) Figure below shows the schematic diagram of a two-stage cascade refrigeration system (also called the Economizer 2-Stage Refrigeration Cycle). Comparing to the cascade two-stage refrigeration system discussed in In-class Activity #10a, in this case, the flash chamber (now called Flash Intercooler) is still used but the mixing chamber is removed. The superheated vapor (2) out of the low-pressure compressor (1) is routed into the flash chamber, and the saturated vapor (3) out of the flash chamber enters directly...

All work must be shown. That is, you need to show the steps and calculations you used to arrive at every answer for credit - For example, I need to see which two numbers you divided to arrive at a particular S? value, F-ratio value, etc. The "Pygmalion Effect" refers to the effect of teacher expectations on student academic achievement and performance (for the classic study on this phenomenon, see Rosenthal & Jacobson, 1968; for a more recent review of...
