A lipid bilayer is a bilayer made up of lipids, mainly phospholipids. Phospholipids have a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail which goes into the core of the bilayer.
This bilayer serves as a biological membrane for most of the living cells. It acts as a barrier for preventing external harmful substances from entering into the cell, The layer is impermeable to ions, and helps the cells maintain the ion conc. gradient. This layer also serves as the cell nucleus membrane.
