  1. In general, a horse in heavy work might consume 2.5-3% of his body weight per day, often with 1.5% of their body weight as forage, and the remaining as “concentrate”. If you only had the orchardgrass and Purina Ultium to feed a 500kg horse, how much of each (in both weight and flakes/scoops) could you feed to meet his energy requirements (see below)? Would that also satisfy his protein requirement? (assuming the orchardgrass is still 10.5% and the Purina Ultium is 11.7%) (10 points)

Hints:

  1. Figure out how much hay he will eat (1.5% of 500kg) 0.015 x 500 kg = 7.5 kg of hay
  2. Figure out how many flakes that is? (round up because you probably can’t split flakes )
  3. Calculate how much energy is coming from those flakes (total weight of flakes x energy)
  4. Figure out the difference between what the hay provides (c) and what the horse needs (below)
  5. Figure out how many kg (and 3-quart scoops) of concentrate that is to meet the energy requirements (it may wind up to not be full scoops!)
  6. Using the kg of hay and grain offered, calculate how much protein is in the total diet and compare that to the NRC requirements for that horse below

NRC Requirement for 500 kg Heavy Working Horse: 26.6 mcal DE/day and 862 grams of protein/day

Bonus (2 points): If the hay was $7 for a 50 lb bale and the Ultium was $26.99/ 50 lb bag, how much would it cost to feed this horse per day? Per year?

Hints: Watch your units and remember your basic algebra… Eg. If trying to solve how many calories are in a flake of hay, and you know how many kcal are in a kg of hay, and you know how much a flake weights (in kg) – solve for the x! Also remember how to convert percentages to decimals… If a feed is 10% CP and a horse eats 7 kg of it…. Multiply 0.10 x 7000 grams.
