ONE MORE TIME See if you, like Tanya, can think critically about college life by examin- ing the following argument presented by Tanya's friend Hope. I know a lot of people who whine and complain about the chil- dren of alumni having an easer time getting into Cromwell than other applicants. I've heard from a friend of mine who does work-study in the admissions office that the average applicant to Cromwell has a one in ten chance of being admitted, but alumni children-they call them legacies" have a four in ten chance. Some people think that's an un- fair advantage, but I don't agree. I think legacies do deserve extra at- tention from the admissions office. My dad is a Cromwell alumnus, so I know about this firsthand. Legacy applicants are more likely to do well when they get to Cromwell, because they understand what the college is all about. They know the old traditions and have a stronger feeling of school pride. They feel committed to Cromwell because of their family connection to it, so they won't want to do anything to jeopardize their success here. They probably have higher retention rates, because legacies won't ever want to transfer to another school. Besides, if your parents graduated from Cromwell, that means they must have been smart- which means that you're smart, too, so you deserve a greater chance of admission to the college. The students I know who happen to be children of Cromwell alumni are all pretty intelligent. I'm afraid I can't say the same for Cromwell students in general. And we shouldn't forget that legacies aren't the only ones who get favorable treatment in the admissions process. Cromwell gives special consideration to other groups, too: athletes, underrepresented minorities, students with special artistic or musical talents, and so on Why not add alumni children to the list? 1. The public has been raising the issue of cromwell admitting legacy children on a preference basis , as they are the wards of the alumni of cromwell , people consider this as a bias against them.

2.The issue raised in this case is of significant nature as it lays down an argument given by a legacy student who gives her point of view in her our favourable advantage , this here undermines the concept of equality and hence needs to be addressed or critically analysed .

ii) Legacies have a four in ten chance of getting admitted.

iii) Percentage Number of legacy students making a donation after two years of graduating is greater than the percentage number of non legacy students.

iv) Legacy applicants are more likely to do well when they get to cromwell because they understand what the college life is about.

v) Cromwell giving preference to other groups also like: athletes , musical talents etc apart from legacies.

vi) Legacies having higher retention rate.

b. There is a factual basis of the claim made of more number of legacies donating than the percantage of non legacies donating to cromwell , this was concluded from a research study , rest all were rather opinions .

c. The claim made by the research study for stating that more than 76 % percentage of the legacies donated $ 100 or more while only 36 % percentage of the non-legacies donated $ 100 or more . Research findings serve as an evidence to this study.

d. Apart from the finding of the research study rest all findings were opinions and therefore could be biased , hence all of them cannot be proclaimed as credible .

4.The sources although seemingly behave as credible sources but are biased in their own way , the admission office person is biased in her opinion as it reflects the number of the people(legacies or non legacies) she is handling who get admitted to cromwell , maybe there are other people in the admissions office too who handle the majority of the non-legacy admissions and their conversions . The author also has a biased point of view as she is considering her example to be followed by every legacy student(her experiences as a legacy student being reflected on the entire community of legacy students)
