CLEARLY IDENTIFY OR NAME THE SPECIFIC INFORMAL FALLACY OR FALLACIES COMMITTED IN THESE ARGUMENTATIVE PASSAGES (10%):
a) Professor Benjamin Arah, I need an “A” in this course to enable me graduate and go to law school or get a good-paying job. You better be advised that if you do not want to give it to me, then I would report you to the Dean of your College (and I know that you would not like the possible outcome!).
b) Since everyone in the United States believes in life after death. And since it is fashionable and now acceptable to believe in what everyone believes in. We can then conclude that there is life after death.
c) Dr. Phil Bowie argues that self-esteem is essential to a good marriage. But Dr. Phil Bowie, who is well-educated and attended an Ivy League university, was not even married to know what makes for a good marriage. Apparently, I do not think that he appears to have the self-esteem that he preaches about. Thus, Dr. Phil Bowie’s arguments about self-esteem and having a good marriage are worthless, useless and nothing but a ranting of an inexperienced young and ambitious fellow hungry for cheap fame and popularity
d) Crimes of theft and robbery have been increasing at an alarming rate lately. The conclusion is most obvious: we (as leaders and policy-makers) must immediately reinstate the death penalty
e) Mr. Conaway has complained about inadequate parking space here at our campus. But did you not hear or know that Mr. Conaway’s first son, Jasper, is a never-do-well and was recently convicted of theft and embezzlement of public funds? His son managed to steal half a million dollars from the First National Bank where he worked before he was eventually caught and sent to prison. You know what they say: “like father, like son”!
