A 12 m3 volume of ideal gas is expanded adiabatically. If the work done by the gas is 900 J what is the change in internal energy of the gas?

The answer is -900J but I don't know how to get this answer.. Show all work!

Thanks!

Answer #1

total heat given to the system(q) = change in internal energy(delta U) + work done by the gas(w)

now., for adiabatic processes,q = 0

thus,   change in internal energy(delta U) = - work done by the gas(w) = -900 J

Answer #2

in adiabatic process deltaQ = 0

by 1st law

0 = U+W

W = -U

-900 J
