Question

3) You are studying hyperactivity in mice. You know that this phenotype is dominant and is determined by just one gene (H) but you need to discriminate between the following alternatives: mitochondria inheritance, maternal effect, regular nuclear inheritance. You cross female mice from a true-breeding hyperactive strain to males from a true-breeding super-chill strain. All the F1 progeny are hyperactive. a) Can you at this point eliminate any of the three modes of inheritance? (0.5pts) You cross these hyper F1 mice to each other. b) What genotypes and phenotypes (hyper vs. chill) do you expect in their F2 progeny under each of the three modes of inheritance? (0.5pts)

Answer #1

1. In cytoplasmic inheritance gene controlling a given trait is inherited exclusively from the mother.and can be expressed in both male and female progeny.

2. In the case of maternal effect, each individual's phenotype is determined by genotype of the mother. The offspring's phenotype is determined by oocyte of the mother.

3. In the case of regular nuclear inheritance genes controlling a given trait is inherited from nucleus of both male and female parents.

4. In cross between true-breeding hyperactive female with true-breeding super chill male, all the F1 progeny are hyperactive. Because the hyperactive trait is a type of cytoplasmic inheritance.

5. If these hyperactive F1 mice to each other all other the F2 progeny would be with hyperactive trait. Because there is lack of segregation.

6. The hyperactive trait is associated with either organellar DNA (Mitochondrial DNA) or cytoplasmic. The only oocyte of mother contribute this trait and can pass it to F1 and F2 generation.

7. The resulting trait would be either mitochondrial inheritance or maternal effect.

[1.] You are studying hyperactivity and learning ability in mice. You have developed two true-breeding strains of mice, one that is hyperactive but a slow learner, another that is lethargic but a fast learner. The distributions of activity levels and learning ability in 500 F2 mice are listed below: 311 hyper & slow 65   hyper & fast      64   lethargic & slow 60   lethargic & fast Note: hyperactive > lethargic and slow > fast Under the assumption of independent assortment, how...

    46. (7 points) Vanessa has obtained two true-breeding strains of mice, each homozygous for an independently discovered recessive mutation that prevents the formation of hair on the body. One of the mutant strains is called naked, and the other mutation strain is called hairless. To determine whether the two mutations are simply alleles for the same gene, Vanessa crosses naked and hairless mice with each other (cross 1). All the offspring are phenotypically wild- type. The following pertains to questions 1-2. Let's say you EMS treat C. elegans, scan for interesting phenotypes, and pick an adult hermaphrodite with an unusually long body. The long body phenotype is referred to as Lon. You establish a homozygous true breeding Lon mutant strain and name it lon-9. Through crosses you discover that the lon-9 mutant allele is recessive. Let's say you work out that the lon-9 gene is X-linked. Ion-2 is an X-linked gene and the Ion-2(e432) allele...

Assume that tail length in mice is a quantitative trait involving two genes, each with 2 alleles. One allele at each gene contributes to long tails, the other allele at each gene does not (small tails). The genes are located on different autosomes. Mice with 0 contributing alleles have tails that are 4 cm in length; mice with tails with 4 contributing alleles are 12 cm in length. Determine the phenotypic ratio from an F2 from a true breeding parent...

You are working with an ornamental fish that shows two color phenotypes, red or blue. The color is controlled by a single gene. These fish are hermaphrodites-meaning they can either (1) self-fertilize or (2) mate with another fish. You have three fish: fish 1, fish 2, and fish 3. While working further with this fish, you discover one other mutation (in a different gene) that leads to the recessive phenotype of long dorsal fins. Further research establishes that the genes...
