Define Level measurement and indicate why it is important to measure level?
Level Measurement: It may refer to the means by which a operator can establish a quantity of a product within a vessel. The product can be in solid and liquid form( which can be from coal dust to milk). To get the continuous updated measured level, a measurement device is usually mounted at the top of the vessel.
The mounted device can be suspended over the open-topped vessel or can be attached to a close vessel via a connection port.
Importance to measure level: To assure safety and profitabilty of processes, it is essential to equip instruments that provide reliable measurements of level.
1. Inventory: The main reason for measuring level is to keep track of inventory in terms of volume or weight.
2. Custody transfer: In many instances, the amount of material that is bought and sold (custody transfer) is based on a level measurement converted into volume or weight.
3. Process efficiency: Accurate level measurement increases efficiency. For example, if a tank needs to maintain a certain amount of certain level and storage tanks are not filled to full capacity, the facility will incur the unneccessary expense of purchasing and maintaing additional storage levels.
4. Safety: Level measurement is also important in ensuring safety. Filling vessels above their capacities can cause safety hazards spills in open vessels. Therefore, monitoring level of tanks is important in preventing leaking out of hazardous mateials.
