let the NRR of the hearing proteciton be x
then
exposure, y = 98 dba
rwquired output, z = 85 dba
hence
z = y - (x - 7)/2
85 = 98 - (x - 7)/2
hence
NRR protection of 33 will ensure that the worker hears below 85 dba
