Question

in Smurfs, dwarf (D is dominant to tall (t), pink (B) is dominant to blue (b), and happy (G) is dominant to gloomy (g). All loci are autosomal and not linked. The phenotypes of parents and their progeny are given for several crosses below. Determine the most likely genotypes for each parent and write them in the appropriate spaces below. Note that the parents may not be pure breeding Female Parent Phenotype Male Parent Phenotype Progeny Numbers and Phenotypes 88 Dwarf, Pink, Happy 92 Dwarf, Pink, Gloomy 33 Tall. Answer #1

Female parent genotype -

Height locus - Tt

Colour locus - bb

Disposition locus - Gg

Male parent genotype -

Height locus - tt

Colour locus - BB

Disposition locus - Gg

Here it is noted that the parents may not be pure breeding which means that the organism must not be homozygous for every trait. That is both alleles which represent a particular trait my be different.

Male parental genotype is ttBBgg - Here the tallness and gloomy are recessive traits so the genotypes can only be tt and Gg respectively. Pink colour is dominant trait and genotype can be bb or BB. But as offsprings of only pink colour are formed,a nd their female parent have blue colour which is a recessive trait, the genotype of male parent for colour can only be BB.

Female parental genotype is TtbbGg - It is because the female parent is dwarf. Dwarfness is a dominant trait, so genotype can be either Tt or TT. Since the offsprings produced are both tall and dwarf and their male parent is tall (tt), the female parent can only be Tt for the trait height. As blue colour is recessive trait, genotype can only be bb.Happy is dominant to gloomy, so happy can either be GG or Gg. But both happy and gloomy offsprings are produced and since their male parent is gloomy, female genotype for happy can be only Gg (heterozygous condition)
