12. Maslow believes that higher order needs must wait until lower order needs are satisfied. So, for example, academics and work, which fall under Esteem needs, would suffer and not be the focus of our attention if you were still focused on getting Love and Belongingness needs met. Have you noticed how higher needs were ignored when lower needs were more pressing? Have you ever slacked off from work or school because of relationship issues? How did you feel afterwards?

As per Maslow, needs has to be fulfilled in a hierarchical fashion. But, I have experienced that when lower needs are pressing, higher more important needs are ignored. Due to issues with friends, I was not doing well in college and faced lots of problems. It was my teen years and friendship was a priority to me. Acceptance, belongingness and love was important. When faced with problem, the higher needs of education was totally ignored. It was a phase, and as I grew up, I later realized my mistake that I should have focussed more on my college and education than on friendship issues. I regret it now.
