PING: Finding Other Computers The PING sends a small packet to any computer on the Internet to show you how long it takes the packet to travel from your computer to the target computer and back again. You can ping a computer using its IP address or Web URL Not all computers respond to ping commands, so not every computer you ping will answer. Start by pinging your default gateway: just type PING followed by the IP address of your gateway. Figure 5-22 shows that the PING command sends four packets to the target computer and then displays the maximum, minimum, and average transit times. In Figure 5-22, you can see that pinging my gateway is fast: less than 1 millisecond for the packet to travel from my computer to my router and back again. Remember that not all websites will respond to the ping command. In Figure 5-22, you can see that it took an average of 52 milliseconds for a packet to go from my computer to Google and back again. Also note that www.google.com has an IP address of 216.239.37.99. Now, ping a website outside the United States. In Eigure 5-20, you can see that it took an average of 239 milliseconds for a packet to go from my computer to the City University of Hong Kong and back again. Qsn.1)Basically pinging own Default gateway You need to follow some steps

i)Open command prompt and the at inside write ipconfig which is the code for showing the local/default ip address of your computer.

ii)Then,copy ur own gateway ip address and then type the code C:\>ping 192.168.1.1 The underline part denotes ur own ip address but it was mine ip address so after giving ur ip address then ping again by the result of which you will s see a box -> 4 packet sent and 4 packet received (0% loss)

It takes minimum 0ms and maximum 0ms.

Qsn. 2) After Pinging google.com it shows the ip address of the google i.e->216.58.197.46

After that it returns 4 packets .It take minimum->29.78ms and maximum->29.90ms and a average of 29.83 ms.

Qsn .3)After pinging http://www.anu.edu.au/ it shows the request time out that means the no. of packet sent is not received by the result of which i sent 4 packet and received 0 packet that means the university site does not respond to other who will ping them across the country.
