Judicial review means the review of the actions of executive or legislature when they exceed their constitutional authority or review of any law, decisions, orders etc. which is ultra vires the constitution or authority given under any law.

It is important because it helps in check and balance system. Judicial review gives the power to court to review the decisions of legislature and executive when they exceed their authority under any constitution or law being at place.

Marbury v. Madison 1803, was the landmark case wherein supreme court of US, held that courts have the power to review decisions of legislation or executive or even invalidate any law, decision taken be executive or legislature.
