Ultrafine particulate matter. Particle sizes smaller than 0.1 microns are typically formed during combustion and as other industrial gaseous emissions. These ultrafine particles are especially hazardous to human health, because they can enter deep within the lungs and react with the cells on a molecular level. These reactions take place by cation exchange.

By contrast, larger particulate matter cannot enter deep within the lungs, and are harmful because of the congestion they cause.
