The mycorrhizal symbiosis is the symbiotic association between the fungi and the roots of vascular plants. The fungi benifits from the symbiotic association by having constant supply of glucose and sucrose from the plants. The plants in turn benifit from the mycelium by it's higher absorptive rate of water and mineral salts.
Mycorrhizae increases the nutrient uptake of plants by having vast surface areas through numerous fungal hyphae. It also mobilises certain mineral salts present in the soil which are unavailable to plants. Further, mycorrhizal plants are more resistant to draught, diseases and salinity.
