Answer #1

Potential & pressure head only.

HGL is obtained by plotting piezometric head at various points along the axis of the pipe.
Hp = P ⁄ γ + z
where Hp is the piezometric head, P ⁄ γ is the pressure head and z is the potential head.

    Question 3 (20 points): This morning an engineer made measurements in three observation wells belonging to an unconfined aquifer. Groundwater was found at the following depths: 10.0, 9.0, and 9.5 meters for wells A, B, and C, respectively. The hydraulic heads of the three measurement points are 150 (well A), 148 (well B) and 149 (well C) meters above sea level. If it is known that well A is located north of well B at a distance of 400 meters,...

    (1) Hydraulic turbines convert the potential energy of water into shaft work, which, in turn, rotates the electric generator coupled to it in producing electric power. Pelton turbine named after Lester Allen Pelton of the USA, an impulse turbine used for high head and low discharge. In an impulse turbine all the available head of water is converted into kinetic energy in a nozzle. The water shoots out of the nozzle in a free jet into a bucket which revolves...
