Ammonium chloride is a strong acid - weak base salt which on hydrolysis gives ammonium ion which is acidic in character. This ammonium ion immediately reacts with any OH- ions in the solution to prevent formation of Mg(OH)2 precipitate. This allows only Ca+2 ions to precipitate and helps us to determine the presence of calcium ions. Ans: b
