Answer #1

a] Let the angle be theta

tan theta = (133/2)/50.5e3 = 0.001317

theta = arctan 0.001317 = 0.07546 degree

b] New angle theta = 0.07546 + 0.005 degree = 0.08046 degree

tan theta = tan 0.08046 degree = 0.001404

New separation between source and sensor = 2*50.5e3 tan theta = 2*50.5e3*0.001404 = 141.8 m

So he needs to move 141.8-133 = 8.8 m south answer

    For an independent study project, you design an experiment to measure the speed of light. You propose to bounce laser light off a mirror that is 46.5 km due east and have it detected by a light sensor that is 105 m due south of the laser. The first problem is to orient the mirror so that the laser light reflects off the mirror and into the light sensor. (a) Determine the angle that the normal to the mirror should...

    Part I: Background When a ray of light strikes a smooth surface, it can either reflect, such as with a mirror, or it can both reflect and refract, such as with glass. In this make-up lab activity, we shall look at both situations. This make-up lab shall try to replicate the lab from your lab manual as best possible. Be sure to read the "Discussion" in your regular lab manual. You will be using the Bending Light simulation. Part II:...

    Question 8 You are conducting an experiment on the diffraction of light through a single narrow slit. You have situated your viewing screen a distance of 1 m away from the slit, with blue light of 450 nm and the slit width is 2.4um. You observe a normal interference pattern with a bright central maximum. What happens to the central maximum if you switch out the 2.4um single slit for a 4.8um single slit? No change occurs to the central...

    To measure the tiny motion of one tectonic plate relative to another, seismologists in Iceland have set up the following interferometer-like device: A laser source producing laser light with wavelength 500 nm is set up on one side of a chasm that forms the boundary between two tectonic plates. The light is split into two beams using an angled piece of glass (acting as a "beam splitter"). One part of the beam crosses the chasm and is reflected back by...

    Partner: Date Name 11 Snell's Law Introduction When light passes from one material to another it is always bent away from its original path. This process is known as refraction and the change in direction depends on the change in optical density (or refractive index) of the two materials. A larger change in refractive index results in a larger change in angle between incoming and outgoing light beams. A light beam bends closer to the normal in the material with...
