During factor independent termination RNA polymerase pauses upon encountering a termination signal is then displaced downstream upon encountering a pause or termination site.

RNA polymerase (RNAP) itself plays a role in the two principal mechanisms of transcription. Transcription termination occurs when EC encounters a termination signal, the RNA sequence form a stable hairpin loop. When RNAP encounters a termination signal, RNAP stops adding nucleotides to the RNA separates the DNA-RNA hybrid, releases the newly synthesized transcript and dissociates from the DNA template. When RNAP encounters a pause, arrest, or termination site, it isomerizes to a slow intermediate in which the RNA 3′ end frays away from the DNA.
