Q6 1 Point A company called Corteva Agri-science has engineered a new strain of maize that increases crop yield by 3-8%. They did this by taking a pro-growth gene called zmm 28 and adding regulatory sequence from a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT gene that caused it to be active earlier in development. According to the revised guidelines of USDA(2020), any product that is produced using genetic engineering tools such as recombination, amplification or changes in a genome is subjected to the regulation. However, USDA exempts any product that is produced by the addition of gene (if the addition is from the plant’s gene pool). As ZMM28(transcription factor) is an innate gene of maize the product produced from its addition will be exempted from USDA regulations.

Acetylcholine esterase is an important enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitter and aids in ending neural transmission. Inhibitors will block the enzyme activity and helps in buildup of acetylcholine in the synapse. This leads to rapid firing of electrical signals which causes muscle twitching, paralysed breathing, convulsion and death fo the insect.
