Ans:

Question 17

a. Both processes result in the formation of phosphodiester bonds

Explanation: Phosphodiester bond is the linkage between the 3'OH group at the one end of sugar molecule and 5'-phosphate group are the end of other sugar molecule. Both replication and transcription results phosphodiester bond formation between the sugar molecules of growing DNA or RNA chain and this phosphodiester bond formation is catalyzes by DNA polymerase, RNA polymerase and ligase. Transcription requires promoter for binding of RNA polymerase but DNA polymerase doesn't require promoter. The synthesized DNA or RNA strand is complementary and antiparallel to the template strand in both replication and transcription processes. Both DNA polymerase III and RNA polymerase read template strand in 3' \rightarrow 5' direction and synthesize product molecules in 5' \rightarrow 3' direction.

Question 18

b. 32 map units

Explanation:

The phenotypes whose frequencies are maximum called parental phenotypes. So, round, yellow and wrinkled, green are the parental phenotypes. The phenotypes whose frequencies are minimum called recombinant phenotypes. So, round, green and wrinkled, yellow are the recombinant phenotypes.

Map distance between color gene and size gene =

(Number of recombinant individuals/ Total number of individuals) × 100

= (15 + 17/ 36 + 32 + 15 + 17) × 100

= (32/100) × 100

= 32 map units

All other options are incorrect because the calculated map distance is 32 map units.
