Reflect on an original example of a time when you used (or could have used) the principles of behaviorism.
My parents were not happy about my coming late most of the evenings and missing on my homework while I was in the school. They told me that if I could come home at the specified time throughout a month unless there was an emergency, I would get twenty-five dollars at the end of the month along with my pocket money. Who doesn’t like money, so I started coming on time without giving into peer pressure and earned my money. They used positive reinforcement to increase the occurrence of me coming home at the specified time. They also tried negative reinforcement earlier but it didn’t work out well. They told that they wouldn’t give me my pocket money if I’m late. In this case they focused on reducing my behaviour of coming late.

Think of a time when you have used self-talk—for example, giving yourself “I can do this!” messages when you are striving to meet a challenge, or “what’s the use?” messages when you are discouraged. Did you purposely choose to use self-talk, or did it just happen?

We wish to use this discussion to formulate ideas about the amount of time it takes for a radioactive substance to decay given a minimal amount of information. Assume we find a radioactive substance with a half-life of 4 days. Is it possible for us to determine the amount of time it takes for only one-eighth of the original amount...

Preparation Identify a goal that you have for yourself. It could be personal, financial, professional, educational, or health related. Think specifically and realistically about the goal. For example, for a person who wanted to lose 25 pounds, it would not be realistic to plan to lose 20 pounds in one week. Once you have identified your specific and realistic goal, think about how operant conditioning behavioral learning principles can be used to help you reach the goal. Create a plan...
