The true average weight of a bag should be 50 kg. 36 bags are weighed obtaining an average of 49.5 kg with a deviation of 1.2 kg. Do a hypothesis test, with 95% confidence, to verify if the content of the bags is different from 50 kg.

A) z = -2.5 <-1.96; Ho is rejected
B) z = -2.5 <-1,645; Ho is rejected
C) z = -2.5 <-1.96; Ho is not rejected
D) z = -2.5 <-1,645; Ho is not rejected

Answer #1

Test statistic = z

= (\bar x - \mu ) / \sigma    / \sqrt n

= (49.5 - 50) / 1.2 / \sqrt 36

=  -2.5

Test statistic =  -2.5

A) z = -2.5 <-1.96; Ho is rejected

Airlines compute the weight of outbound flights using either standard average weights provided by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or weights obtained from their own sample surveys. The FAA standard average weight for a passenger’s carry-on items (personal items plus carry-on bags) is 16 pounds. Many airline companies have begun implementing fees for checked bags. Economic theory predicts that passengers will respond to the increase in the price of a checked bag by substituting carry-on bags for checked bags. As...

A Brisbane warehouse buys pre-packed bulk bags of Bundaberg Sugar with an advertised mean weight of 20 kilograms. To determine the validity of the advertised claim, the warehouse manager took a random sample of fifty packets from the latest shipment received and found an average weight of the packets of 20.015 kilograms. Bundaberg Sugar know, from analysing data over many years, that their 20kg bulk bag packing process results in a standard deviation of 55 grams. 1. State the direction...
