Answer #1

The concepts of problem focussed coping and emotion focussed coping were given by Lazarus and Folkman (1984).

In problem focussed coping, we tackle the stressor (causes of stress) in a practical way. We try to understand the situation, use various problem solving strategies and think logically and rationally to arrive at a conclusion. Here, we deal with the root cause of the problem and then try to arrive at a solution.

On the other hand emotion focussed coping refers to the coping strategies where we use our emotions like crying, venting out feelings etc. Other methods can be eating comfort foods, trying to laugh it out etc. We use these strategies when things are beyond our control.

Physiological reactions to stress include, elevated blood pressure, faster heart beat, sometimes even body pain and problems like fibromyalgia due to long term exposure to stress. Psychological reactions might include anything from crying, expressing anger to using defense mechanisms like denial, displacement etc. Psychologically people might become more depressed, anxious or restless.

New age psychological and mental issues call for new age solutions. Today new age issues comprise of eating disorders, cannabis withdrawal, caffeine withdrawal etc. Therefore, a mix of problem focussed and emotion focussed coping strategies might be beneficial for these new age disorders.
