Utilitarian ethics suggests that an act would be considered ethical if it maximizes benefit to maximum number of people and reduce any harm. This would mean that I should try to maximize utility in this instance and reduce any harm. I would save the person because the dog has no moral commitments or the loss of the dog would be felt by any other dogs. Human beings are not individual islands, but they are closely connected to their community thus, there would be many people such as, parents, family friends, colleagues etc. who would feel the heat of the loss. Secondly, the human being would be able to take care of many other dogs if the person is saved but the dog cannot think and make a moral decision or give a commitment to look after many people or other dogs. So, my choice would the person.
