HCL is secreted in the gastric juice and is an important part of digestion. It is secreted into the stomach. It helps in the digestion. It also denatures the protein. It activates the pepsin by lowering the pH to approx 5.6. The low pH by HCL helps in destroying microorganisms. It has no role in the starch breakdown.
