HIV has no cure and kills an estimated 500,000+ people each year when it progresses to AIDS. When you are handling patient samples in the hospital it is considered to be BSL level 2.

Why is it considered BSL 2 if the virus is so deadly?

Answer- Handling HIV patient's sample is considered as BSL-2, if it is lethal as BSL-2 labs in maintain the same standard microbial practices as BSL-1 labs, but also includes some enhanced measures due to the potential risk of the infectious microbes. The workers are told to take greater care to prevent cuts injuries, any kind of breach on the skin or exosure to mucous membrane.

  • The worker wear personal protective equipment and gloves along with Eye protection and face shields.
  • Autoclaving and proper disposal is essential.
  • Biohazard signs should be there.
  • The procedures involving organisms causing infection from aerosols are performed within a biological safety cabinet.
