Montgomery and Kirsch (1996) conducted an experiment on the placebo effect. In pain relieving it is found that cognitive effect plays major role in reducing pain.

It is found that a large number of people are victim of the anxiety for pain. In reality it appears that anxiety is the main source of pain. It is an imaginary pain and the people are victim of this pain. So, in such case, placebo effect is more effective.
