The voltage gated sodium channel is responsible for uptake of sodium ions inside the membrane. This causes depolarisation of the membrane. Because sodium ions lead to positive charge inside the membrane.

When lidocine acts on the sodium ion channel, then sodium ion channel is inhibited. The sodium ion can't enter in the membrane. That's why the potential will not increase upto 40 mV. Line C depicts this condition.

Line A depicts the activation of sodium ion channel. This leads to maintain the potential of membrane.
