A current therapy for cancer is an organic molecule that binds to the active site of Caspase-3. Describe the pathway that is inhibited by this drug and explain how this drug could help decrease the size of a tumor.

Caspase 3 is an enzyme closely related to the apoptotic process, which is a major process involved in cancer development. Remember that evasion of apoptosis is closely related to cancer.

In few words we could say that a low or blocked caspase activity brings cancer and tumor growth, while a high/normal caspase activity prevents cancer, or reduces the size of a tumor. There are natural caspase inhibitors that work to avoid premature apoptosis in cells, but an overexpression of these inhibitors block apoptosis and lead to cancer development.

This current therapy mentioned then must be enhancing the caspase activity, it must work by activating the enzyme by attaching to it. The increased activity of caspase now can beggin to induce apoptosis in the tumoral cells, thus leading to decreasing tumor size
