Question

A cylindrical pressure vessel is constructed by welding steel plates together. The pressure vessel supports an internal pressure of 240 (psi). In addition the pressure vessel supports an axial load of 270000 (lbs.). The inner radius of the pressure vessel is 48 (inches) with a wall thickness of 0.3125 (inches). The plates are welded at 72 degrees from the horizontal. Determine:

a) the stresses perpendicular and parallel to the weld. Show the stresses on a properly oriented differential element.
