Fixed mindset refers to people who think that intelligence and other abilities are fixed and that one cannot improve them with one’s efforts. People with fixed mindset would think that those who try hard or put additional effort are not smart people but inadequate. They would also deny that they have any problem and would criticize others if they are pointed out about their mistakes. They would avoid risks and give plenty of reasons for not taking risks and learn new things. One of my friends from my childhood struggled with this fixed mindset which limited him from exploring the world and utilizing opportunities to his fullest potential. He was always afraid of the unknown and carried the fear of failure. When he fails in a subject or the first effort in something like sports, he would just give up by saying that it’s all his ability and he couldn’t change anything about it. He would never visit a new place or mingle with new people because he is afraid of the fact that he could only meet familiar people since he can’t accommodate or adjust his ideas and thoughts with new people. He struggled hard to accept the fact that he was struggling from inferiority complex and fixed mindset which mad other people to neglect him and he would always feel lonely. Later, he went into depression since he was not able to maintain his relationship or job. Had he listened to others and changed his ways, he would have got many friends and succeeded in life.
