Mercury generally takes approximately 1 to 2 years for concentration in fish species to dropdown to background level. The Mercury that is released due to the mining settle down on the upper layer of the soil which is washed off to the water bodies. The Mercury is converted into methyl Mercury by the process of methylation. The methylated form of Mercury has very high rate of absorption and can easily cross the membrane accumulation of mercury in the body is very fatal . Due to the mining process , Mercury enters into the food cycle of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem. Excessive Mercury concentration in the water leads to the death of the fishes , reduces the the number of large fishes in the pond ecosystem . The accumulation of mercury in the humans through the food cycle result in the deterioration of the nervous system , loss of hearing , speech , abnormal involuntary movements in the body.
