Should Community College measure its success by checking if there are increasing numbers of new student enrollments? (metric 2)

The Hawthorne Effect states that knowing how one is being measured will change how that person behaves. Consider what impact measuring those two items will have on the behavior of employees of the college. Remember that this impact is outside of the direct results of the metric and the people using this information are college employees. When an employee becomes aware that their success is related to a particular metric, the employee will modify their behavior to fit the measurement criteria. The goal of the employee's behavioral change will be to improve the results of the metric. The modification is likely to be a negative one, even though it aids in the improvement of the metric score. Predicting these changes in advance is the core behind applying Hawthorne Effect theory in management.

o Consider what impact measuring those two items will have on the non-financial behavior of employees of the college. Remember that this impact is outside of the direct results of the metric and the people using this information are college employees.

o Identify two employee behavioral modifications resulting from each metric, for a total of four behavioral changes.  At least one change per metric must be a negative behavioral change and neither may be financial.

o Provide reasoning as to why the employees will change their behavior in the ways that you suggest.

Example: Based on the GPA proposal, teachers will be aware that their own performance will be judged based on the grades that their students achieve. Some teachers will be motivated to spend more time with students and aid them to perform better. This is unlikely to be the case for the majority of teachers, for whom time is already precious. Instead, they will make courses easier. Students will achieve better grades, but will learn less and be less prepared for their futures. Overall, the use of GPA to measure college success is not acceptable.

I guess need to come up with modification related to metric 2.In this case modification #4 is one of the behavior.Modification is Identify two employee behavioral modifications resulting from the metric, for a total of two behavioral changes. At least one change per metric must be a negative behavioral change and neither may be financial.Hope it help.

My question:

Negative or Positive Non-financial behavior of employees, BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATION #1 (For Metric 2) ?

Reasoning for behavior Modification #4?

Thank you very much.

Answer #1

ANS- A community college should not measure its success by the number of enrollments. It should measure its success by knowing the number of placements done from their college, which means how many students get jobs from your college after studying a particular course. Every student checks the placement rate of the college before enrolling himself and herself into the college. This is the biggest factor and the measure to know the success rate.

Write a reflective paragraph summarizing your thoughts. Organizational change research has been criticized for neglecting the role of history in the study of change (Pettigrew et al., 2001). Much of the existing research tends to treat organizational change as “episodic” and comprising of independent events (Pettigrew, 1987, p. 655). More generally, research in organizational behavior has tended to ignore the theoretical and methodological significance of context in the examination of work attitudes and outcomes (Johns, 2006). In the studies reported...
