Earmark : Gravina Island Bridge or Bridge to Nowhere (Cost: $398 million)

Congressperson : Ted Stevens, A American Republican politician who served as a United States Senator from Alaska from 1968 to 2009.

Purpose of Earmark : connect the island's 50 residents and the Ketchikan International Airport to Revillagigedo Island and Ketchikan.

Why considered an Earmark: In 2005, Senator Tom Coburn offered an amendment to remove funds for the Gravina Island and Knik Arm bridges, and divert the funds to rebuild a bridge over Lake Pontchartrain that was damaged by Hurricane Katrina, a move aimed for the betterment of the country but Republican Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska strongly opposed diverting the Gravina and Knik Arm Bridge funds to help in the disaster aid and therefore, indicating that the expenditure was done for the purpose of stronger political holding in Alaska rather than for the benefit of the country.
