Answer #1

Null Hypothesis

H0: u1 - u2 = 0, where u1 is the mean of first population and u2 the mean of the second.

As above, the null hypothesis tends to be that there is no difference between the means of the two populations; or, more formally, that the difference is zero (so, for example, that there is no difference between the average heights of two populations of males and females).

Equation

t_independent_means.png

For rippled potato chips,

M1: 1.83
SS1: 0.67
s21 = SS1/(N - 1) = 0.67/(6-1) = 0.13

For non rippled potato chips,

N2: 5
df2 = N - 1 = 5 - 1 = 4
M2: 1.72
SS2: 0.19
s22 = SS2/(N - 1) = 0.19/(5-1) = 0.05

T-statistic Calculation

s2p = ((df1/(df1 + df2)) * s21) + ((df2/(df2 + df2)) * s22) = ((5/9) * 0.13) + ((4/9) * 0.05) = 0.1

s2M1 = s2p/N1 = 0.1/6 = 0.02
s2M2 = s2p/N2 = 0.1/5 = 0.02

t = (M1 - M2)/√(s2M1 + s2M2) = 0.11/√0.04 = 0.61

The t-value is 0.605. The p-value is .56012. The result is not significant at p < .05.

Also using Excel, data toolpack,

We conclude that, Both populations have Same mean.

    9. A potato chip manufacturer claims that the weights of its potato chips are normally distributed with a mean of 10 ounces per bag. The Department of Consumer Protection takes a random sample of 23 bags of potato chips from a shipment to test whether or not they really weigh 10 ounces. If the sample has mean weight of 9.85 ounces and standard deviation of 0.3 ounce, can you conclude that a bag of potato chips does not weigh 10...

    Think about a population mean that you may be interested in and propose a hypothesis test problem for this parameter. Gather appropriate data and post your problem. Include the null and alternative hypothesis, alpha value, p-value, and a conclusion. Make sure that you use appropriate terminology, specify whether you are using the classical method or the p-value method, and fully explain your solution. How do we determine that we are to fail to reject the null hypothesis? What process do...

    Option 1 or 2 Option 1: Think about a population mean that you may be interested in and propose a confidence interval problem for this parameter. Your data values should be approximately normal. For example, you may want to estimate the population mean number of times that adults go out for dinner each week. Your data could be that you spoke with seven people you know and found that they went out 2, 0, 1, 5, 0, 2, and 3...

    5. In this problem, you will design new logic diagrams for problems 1 c and 4 c, optimizing the solution to use a minimum number of gates and chips. You may use whatever real chips you like in this problem. Assume that these two circuits make up a single design so that unused parts of one chip for the first circuit can be used for the second circuit.
