Given Data:

5km3 contained 89000 zebra mussel colonies. Each colony produced 120 colonies.

So total number of colonies produced over three years= 89000 x 120 = 10680000 colonies

Only 2% of this colonies survived after 1st year. So total number of colonies survived = 10690000 x 2/100 = 213600 colonies

Total colonies washes away or died(Total death)= 97000 colonies

Total number of colonies attached themselves and left(Emigration)= 85000 colonies

So number of colonies remain= 213600-85000= 128600 colonies

1. Calculate the change in population size.

Answer: Change in population size(ΔN/Δt) = (Birth+Immigration) - (Death+Emigration) = (213600+0)- 97000-85000 = 31600 Colonies

2. Calculate the per capita growth rate over the three year period.

Answer: Per capita growth rate = ((G / N) * 100) / t, Where G= Change in size of the population, N= Initial Population, t= number of years

So per capita growth rate= ((31600/85000) x 100)/3 = 0.12

3. Calculate the population density in the end of the third year.

Answer: Population density is Dp= N/A

Where, N= total population survived, A= Area

population density is Dp= N/A= 128600/5km3 = 25720 colonies/ km3
