Outline the challenges that unions will have to overcome if they are to increase membership.
The challenges that unions will have to overcome if they are to increase membership are-
- Cooperation- When the membership increases, cooperation and coordination among them would be difficult to arrive at a consensus.
- Hired leaders- Unions hire leaders to lead them however this would result in them fighting against union members’ right to vote and select new members for the union membership.
- Generation gap- An increased membership will have different generations such as mix of baby boomers and Millennials. This would result in lot of disagreements in the unions.
- Increased competition- A large number of union members would increase in intense competition for local union representatives.
- Under-represented groups- Unions with large number of workers will result in participation of under-represented group (such as women) at all levels in the union affairs. This might lead to gender conflicts.
