As a genetics counselor, you determine that both spouses are heterozygous for the cystic fibrosis allele. Knowing that this allele is recessive, what would you tell them about the possibility of having a child with cystic fibrosis?

Recessive disease means that they will express the effect only when both the alleles would be recessive. Now, considering both the parents as heterozygous for cystic fibrosis there is 25% chance of the offspring to have effective cystic fibrosis.

Let X' is an allele with cystic fibrosis. As both parents are heterozygous for cystic fibrosis so their genetic composition are XX'. X is a normal allele.

After crossing XX' to XX'

X X'
X XX(normal child) XX'(carrier child)
X' XX'(carrier child) X'X'(child with cystic fibrosis)

So, there is 25% chance of having a normal child. 50% chance of having a heterozygous child for cystic fibrosis ( as that of parents). And 25% chance of having a child with cystic fibrosis.
