How true is it that the observance of Sacred Time and Sacred Space are the defining features of Jewish identity?

That which is 'sacred' is something which is 'set apart' or distinct. Within a religious tradition, sacred places include those spaces set apart as being special or divinely demarcated. Similarly, sacred time in religion is the ritualized time over the course of the calendar year set apart to observe one's religious faith in some way. To be sure, all religions have sacred places and sacred times. When one thinks of the importance of geography (i.e. Israel) and architectural spaces (i.e. the synagogue) within Jewish tradition, as well as the prominence of holy days and festivals within the religion, it seems that the observance of sacred spaces and times and Jewish identity are inextricably linked.

With that said, in responding to my prompt this week, you need to provide TWO examples that either support or challenge this question. In arranging your argument, please be sure to first state your position and then devote three distinct paragraphs to each of your three examples.

Answer #1

It’s true that all the religions have their own sacred places and sacred times that are holy to them. Visiting those places and celebrating specific times are really important and it comes as celebrations such as events and people. Jews especially hold their synagogues as very special place because it’s their place of worship. Apart from their synagogues, they have also got four places that they hold dear to their identities such as Jerusalem, Hebron, Tiberias, and Safed that are considered to be the holy cities for Jews.

Observing Sabbath is one of the most important acts which is very regular. Passover, Rosh Hashanah the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement are some other holy days that are considered to be the sacred times for Jews. These sacred places and times help the Jews hold on to their identity while also help them come together to celebrate and rejoice.
