5. For this part of the lab you will be observing a whitefish blastula under the microscope. A blastula is a developmental stage in many animals. It occurs shortly after fertilization and the formation of the zygote. It is the “ball of cells” stage of development, where cells are dividing rapidly to form the multicellular organism. Note: In this simulation early and late prophase are combined into one stage: prophase. 1. Go to the Virtual Microscope (Links to an external site.) (BioNetwork NC Community Colleges). URL (if link above does not work): http://www.ncbionetwork.org/iet/microscope/ (Links to an external site.) 2. Click on the Explore tab at the bottom of the simulation. 3. Click on the box with the "?" on it to the right of the microscope. This is a box of slides. 4. Select "Animal Slides". 5. Select the "Whitefish Interphase" slide. A pop-up box will appear to show you the microscope view. Use the course focus, fine focus and light adjust to focus the slide on the 4x objective. Click the 10x objective and use the fine focus and light adjust to focus the slide . Repeat with the 40x objective. 6. On a blank piece of paper, make a drawing of the cell. 7. Label the drawing with the following: A. Stage of mitosis (Note: your first drawing will be "Interphase", which is Not a stage of mitosis). B. Total magnification (assume eyepiece magnification is 10x on this microscope). C. Label the structures if visible: cell membrane, chromosomes, nucleus. 8. Click "Remove Slide" to return the slide to the box. 9. Repeat steps 4-8 to make drawings of each stage of mitosis, in the correct order. 10. When done, scan or take a picture of the page with your drawings and upload it to this question.

6.Now you will get some practice looking at mitosis in plant cells by looking at the tip of a root of an onion. Plant roots need to grow to find water and nutrients so they are constantly undergoing mitosis.
