Answer #1

Ans 9) We know,

Absoprtion = [(Saturated mass - Dry mass) / Dry mass] x 100

  For 24 hr submersion,

% cold water absorption = [(2.453 - 2.186) / 2.186] x 100 = 12.21 %

Now,

For 5 hr submersion,

% boiling water absorption = [(2.472 - 2.186) / 2.186] x 100 = 13.08 %

=> Saturation coefficient = 24 hr absorption / 5 hr absorption = 12.21 / 13.08 = 0.93

As per ASTM C67 requirements, a brick should either have maximum permissible cold water absorption less than 8% or maximum permissible saturation coefficient of 0.78. Since, this brick fails both requirements, this brick is not suitable as per ASTM C67 guidelines.

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
