hidden files/ directories are used to store user freference or preserving the state of a utility in a file system, these files/ directories arent displayed by default by ls (listing command in unix like os), and starts with .(dot), to display these files we have to use 'a' flag with the ls as ls -a, these files are also used to store configuration settings for various applications.

you can see that files and directorie begining with . are hidden and aren't listed with the ls command

and are listed when 'a' flag is used
