Carbon monoxide is a potent poison that is potentially fatal at high levels. Explain biochemically the mechanism of action for CO poisoning. What treatment would be best for a patient who has been exposed to high levels of CO?

CO poisoning occurs from breathing co at excessive levels.It remains the leading cause of death in united states.CO produces toxicity by binding with haemoglobin,thereby reducing oxygen-carrying capacity,and by binding to myoglobin which may impair cardiac output and result in cerebral ischemia.CO produces anaemic hypoxia ,because it binds with hb with very high affinity,preventing oxygen from binding and it reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood.The tissues do not get sufficient oxygen to maintain their metabolic needs,because the blood is not carrying it.Here CO combines with Hb to form COHb instead of oxy-haemoglobin.CO competes with oxygen for binding with haemoglobin.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be used to quickly reduce the CO level in the blood and the symptoms of CO poisoning.Main use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.The main thing that is considered here is the amount of CO in the blood.
