Answer #1

1.

The primary difference between management and leadership is that leaders don’t necessarily hold or occupy a management position. In simpler words, a leader doesn’t have to be an authority figure in the organization; a leader can be anyone.

Unlike managers, leaders are followed because of their personality, behaviour, and beliefs. A leader personally invests in tasks and projects and demonstrates a high level of passion for work. Leaders take a great deal of interest in the success of their followers, enabling them to reach their goals to satisfaction—these are not necessarily organizational goals.

The three important differences between Manager and Leader are:

(i) A leader invents or innovates while a manager organizes

(ii) A manager relies on control, whereas a leader inspires trust

(iii) A leader asks the questions “what” and “why", whereas a manager leans more towards the questions “how” and “when” ?

There are three tests to help managers decide if they have successfully made the shift from managing people to leading them. These are:

Counting value vs. Creating value 2 Circles of influence vs. Circles of power 3 Leading people vs. Managing people

The manager counts the value whereas the leader creates and adds value.

Manager creates subordinates and hence they create circles of power, whereas leader influences and hence creates circle of influence.

The manager controls and manages people whereas Leading people with motivation and influence is the responsibility of a leader.

In conclusion- Leadership is more about change, inspiration, setting the purpose and direction, and building the enthusiasm, unity and 'staying-power' for the journey ahead. Management is less about change, and more about stability and making the best use of resources to get things done... But here is the key point: leadership and management are not separate. And they are not necessarily done by different people. It's not a case of, 'You are either a manager or a leader'. Leadership and management overlap.

Business world example- Starbucks' CEO is known for his exceptional treatment to its employees. In 1997 three employees were killed in a bungled robbery of one of the Washington D.C. stores. Instead of issuing a press release or calling legal counsel, CEO Howard Schultz flew straight to D.C. and spent the entire week with the employees and their families in the area. Schultz's compassion and incredible leadership helped heal those closest to the tragedy.

2.

All workers must be aware of emerging leadership issues such as emotional intelligence, trust, women leaders, and servant leadership. These trait studies can affect leaders' decision-making skills, strategy implementation, and ability to build organizational citizenship behaviors. For women as leaders, the focus is shifting to behaviors and style rather than gender stereotypes.

In servant leadership (like other leadership models), trust plays a pivotal role in the interdependence that exists between leaders and followers. Relationships built on trust and service are the basis for the influence of servant leadership. It is seen that employee perceptions of organisational servant leadership resulted in higher levels of trust in the leader than perceptions of non-servant leadership.

Likewise, research found that leaders who are able to identify and understand the emotions of others can influence the feelings of subordinates in such a way that enthusiasm, productivity, cooperation and trust in other employees are maintained.

Servant leadership can be measured in a workplace setting and correlates positively with two other organisational constructs, namely emotional intelligence and trust. This provides useful information for practicable leadership development interventions in organisations.

Business world example- The most successful CEOs in real life are well-adjusted leaders who know how to harness their emotional intelligence as a way to bring out the best in others.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos uses his self-deprecating humor to make others feel comfortable with him.

Elon Musk has thanked Tesla owners on Twitter for taking a chance on his cars when experts said his company wouldn’t work.

Ford’s former CEO Alan Mulally, who wrote handwritten notes to employees, praising their work.

3.

Fellowership can be defined as a process in which subordinates recognize their responsibility to comply with the orders of leaders and take appropriate action consistent with the situation to carry out those orders to the best of their ability. In the absence of orders they estimate the proper action to contribute to mission performance and take that action.

It is a process of attaining one's individual goals by being influenced by a leader into participating in individual or group efforts towards organizational goals in a given situation. Fellowership is a relational role in which followers have the abillity to influence leaders and contribute to the improvement and attainment of group and organizational objectives.

It is primarily a hierarchically upwards influence.

Fellowership is the process of ataining one's individual goals.

Different authors give different types of followers based on their theories.

Types of follwers as given by Robert Kelly are:

Conformist, Passive, Alienated, Exemplary and Pragmatic.

4.

The simplest definition is that leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal. In a business setting, this can mean directing workers and colleagues with a strategy to meet the company's needs.

Steve Jobs is a classic example of someone who learned to lead despite not being born a natural leader. Earlier in his career at Apple, he was intolerant of anything he viewed as a failure, and his foul-mouthed tirades were the stuff of legend. After he was re-hired at Apple, steve job's management style began to shift. He started to moderate some of his more negative traits and showed more empathy toward others, realizing that people had limits.

The top most leadership qualities include communication, integrity, accountability, empathy, humility, vision, influence, positivity, delegation and confidence.
