How acidic would the external pH need to become in order to make it possible to synthesize one ATP molecule from the energy delivered when one proton enters the mitochondrial matrix? Assume ATP formation requires 52.0kJ/mol, 37 degrees Celcius, -0.12V membrane potential, and matrix pH at 7.2. Please be specific and show work!

Answer #1

Answer:

  • The inner mitochondrial membrane is always acidic compared to the mitochondrial matrix due to the active pumping of H+ ions from complex I, II and III of ETC.
  • This concentration of H+ ions is used drive the ATP synthase for the production of ATP on the mitochondrial matrix side.
  • Studies have shown that always the inner mitochondrial membrane pH will be 0.8 units lesser than the matrix.
  • In this case, the pH would 6.4 in comparison to 7.2 of the matrix.
  • This pH is feasible as the matrix pH is neutral and external pH is in the acidic range.

PLEASE ANSWER ALL PARTS. THANK YOU! 11. (13 pts) Electron transfer Electron transfer translocates protons from the mitochondrial matrix to the external medium, establishing a pH gradient across the inner membrane (outside more acidic than inside). The tendency of protons to diffuse back into the matrix is the driving force for ATP synthesis by ATP synthase. During oxidative phosphorylation by a suspension of mitochondria in a medium of pH 6.9, the pH of the matrix has been measured as 7.7....
