Answer #1

1) HoloLens has many potential uses within and round a university. The greatest use I can think of is the ability for students to be able to take notes in class from PowerPoints, demonstrations, and other information displayed through the HoloLens. Apart from that, the various different departments and majors offered at a university can find their own uses for augmented reality, and specifically a HoloLens.

2) For architecture I can see HoloLens being used to overlay building and structural designs to see what they look like before being constructed. For chemistry I can see graphics and illustrations being displayed on the screen, like the periodic table or something. For law I can imagine jurors being taken to a digitally designed crime scene, without ever leaving the courtroom. (Augmented Reality for Lawyers, 2018) For medicine it might be useful to have medical diagrams and graphics viewable during a surgery or operation, without having to use your hands. For business I can see a use in which company plans and strategies can be presented in a meeting to members like a PowerPoint but in front of their eyes. (Michalos, Karagiannis, Makris, Tokçalar, & Chryssolouris, 2016) Notes can be taken without ever having to look away from the presentation. For geography maps and illustrations can be displayed or animated to show an increased amount of useful information compared to a static image. Political science can benefit from AR by allowing for more accurate and rapid sharing of information important to the development of legislature. (Lohrmann, 2016) Art can see potentially some of the most benefit from AR because of the way many art forms rely on visual information. If an artist can see the original content they’re basing their design off of, then the better idea they can get of what modifications should be made.

3) The first roadblock to be encountered when trying to create the applications and the environments they would succeed in is cost. AR units, of any kind, are expensive and require a reasonable need to consider the purchasing of many units. Next, learning activities and a plan of action need to be developed and tested. Finally, students need to be educated on the proper use of the technology to get the best results and ultimately learn most productively.

4) Since many augmented reality technology units are still being developed, the examples we are seeing are designed for their specific units. In other words, an application designed for the Oculus Rift may very well be a great application for the HoloLens, but because they are developed in different ways it may not be reasonable to recreate it for the HoloLens. As AR progresses and popularity begins to pick up, I can see an application standard being developed for the purpose of developing applications usable by all augmented reality systems.

5) Technology is constantly changing and there’s really no way to predict what’s around the corner. Any technology or invention made today, could very well be made obsolete in the next couple of years with the development of other technologies. “These glasses will change the technology world as we know it. The smartphone will be replaced.” (Lohrmann, 2016) We hear it all the time, a new technology ready to replace an old one. With this idea, we can assume HoloLens will make great waves and improve the lives of many people, However, we can also assume that its time is limited, and a new technology will eventually be better and leave us with no need to use or develop for the old augmented reality HoloLens.
