Answer #1

Ans: Main problem with expansive soils are volumetric changes by the effect of climatic changes. Since the house is single family house the chances of the construction are mainly single storey so there will be not that much problem with the soils. And the problem will be severe if the differential settlement occurs unless it will be ok because generally clay will undergo long term consolidation process which will take some years to settle if the even settlement occurs then there will be no problem because the surcharge or self weight of the building not that much effect. And to reduce the effect we can go for soil stabilization by using cement etc., but the best alternative way is to provide vertical sand drains since this is a single house building which will not require many numbers. The vertical sand drains are improve the drainage conditions which will remove the excess water which will eventually reduce the changes. It is the best soil improvement method and used for pre-construction consolidation effect reduction.
